| Company Visit Hitachi GE Nuclear Power Energy |
Hitachi-GE Nuclear Ltd, was the last destination for Study on Japanese Companies and Industries. The study tour itself held at 23th November 2016, actually that date was national holiday. However, I was very lucky since only 8 of SJCI students that could participate on this tour. The journey took about 3 hours, since the factory located in Hitachi city in Tochigi Prefecture.
We arrived at Hitachi around 10.50 AM. First we were introduced to company profile. Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd., was established in 2007 by Hitachi, Ltd., and General Electric Co. of the U.S. as a means of participation in the nuclear energy business. Hitachi-GE Nuclear, Ltd., has participated in the construction of all of the nuclear power generation plants(ABWR) in Japan and provide high-quality products and services. Business outline of the company has five main contents
1. Design
Implement 3-D plant Computer-Aided Engineering for the improvement of operating efficiency and developed it into an integrated plant CAE system for the realization of higher quality plant design.
2. Manufacturing
Engage in the manufacture of nuclear power generation equipment offering the highest levels of safety and reliability.
3. Construction
Build plants by incorporating advanced methods, including large-slace module construction and block construction, to meet the need for streamlined construction and shorter work periods.
4. Maintenance
Incorporate the latest inspection, repair and preventive-maintenance practices in order to ensure services of the highest value.
5. Research and Development
Conduct research and development in the fields of nuclear power plants, nuclear fuel and the nuclear fuel cycle.
After having a lunch, we were going to Odaira memorial museum. The museum was about the founding father of Hitachi Ltd and scenery of the first workshop. The equipment for manufacturing itself still traditional. I was surprised that the first product of this company was a motor and some of the them were functioning. Then, we headed to Rinkai works and introduced how to manufacture the heavy component of the reactor. It took about 4-5 years to finished the manufacture of nuclear power plant, excluding licensing and designing process.
